So a few months ago, my buddy Josh was talking about a beer he had that he really liked. It was from The New Albanian Brewing Company, which is located in Indiana. They don’t distribute here, and he said the beer was rare. I had never heard of it, so I asked him to send me a bottle. He did. It has been sitting in the fridge ever since. I was sick of looking at it, so we decided to drink it tonight.
Oh, and I LOVE the label. It is naughty, hence the name, and somewhat deductive. Of course, the girl has a tail… But that’s beside the point. Also, I didn’t realize this was a Belgian IPA. That changes things.
In the Glass: Well, if the head would ever go down, I would tell you. The head is literally like a crust on top of this beer. I need a spoon to eat it. The beer has a nice color to it, and is somewhat cloudy. This beer did travel a LONG way. I think Josh actually shipped it in a shoe box. Let’s see what this naughty girl smells like.
Nose: It smells like an IPA. But it is muted and doesn’t have a big hoppy aroma to it. If you remember correctly, I don’t typically like Belgian IPAs. I like hops. The hoppier the better. But this one smells like it might have a nice spice to it. I can’t get past the “blonde” in the name of this beer. But I will give it a shot and drink with an open palate. Is that proper way to say that?
I have to… Let’s see what this naughty girl tastes like. Ha!
Flavor: The flavor is weak, and I am not even sure I would consider this a pale ale, let alone an IPA. But that’s OK. We are planning to review another beer tonight, so light on the hops is a good thing. However, as this beer sits here, the hops really come forward. There isn’t much spice, like I thought there would be, but for a beer to get the night started, I am impressed. What else does this brewing company make? On BeerAdvocate it says “Pizzeria and Public House.” I like pizza.
Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is nice and thick, almost creamy, and while the head is still thick, the beer is literally hanging on to the side of the glass for dear life. The lace on this is incredible. After you swallow, your palate is hit with the hops that I was looking for earlier. The flavor is so muted, but the complexity of this beer is there.
Aftertaste: This is where the hops really come out. There aren’t many/any hops in the aroma, and there are no hops in the flavor… But after you swallow, your palate is just overwhelmed with hop flavors that have me going back for more. This might be my first beer from this brewing company, but I want to try more. Josh… Can you send me some more beers from this brewing company?
It took us a long time to review this beer, but the wait was worth it. I like it. Oh, and I just learned that this beer was a collaboration with the Louisville Beer Store and De Struise Brouwers. I haven’t heard of those brewing companies, either. Oh well, the beer is good! Cheers.
We have had this beer sitting in our fridge for a while. If I remember correctly, Josh sent it to us from Indiana. Thanks, Josh! The first thing I have to say about it is that it has a lot of head. And not just a lot of head, but a lot of head that just won’t go away. Ricky poured it quite a while ago, and the head is still there. I’m pretty sure it’s not ever going to go down. I guess I need to just drink it anyway.
The beer is a very dark golden wheat color. I know it’s not a wheat beer, but it almost has the same look of one only darker. It’s almost orange, but not quite. I don’t know if it’s because of all the head, but I can’t really get any smell out of it. It doesn’t smell like much of anything to me. I hope it tastes like something!
Well, once you get past the foam, the beer kind of tastes just like an IPA to me. It’s hoppier than most other styles. Ricky just said it’s a “Belgian white IPA”. That makes it sound a lot fancier than it tastes. It’s not as hoppy as most IPAs, but really, the hops are all I taste. I know, my palate sucks when it comes to IPAs. They all just taste like hops to me. For the most part. There are some exceptions. But this isn’t one of them. I’m not impressed. It’s kind of hoppy, but I don’t get much flavor or anything special other than that. I’d definitely choose something else over this again.
