Ricky’s Thoughts

I had a can of this last year, and while the beer was good, it didn’t blow me away. According to their website, this beer is a double chocolate porter, but I don’t remember getting much if any chocolate in the beer last year. For the record, BeerAdvocate calls it an American Porter. The beer does have an awesome logo, and apparently they haven’t been sued yet for using the name Sex Panther. Watch out… Ron Burgundy is coming for ya!

I will admit, my palate has changed a lot over the last year. Oh, and to celebrate reviewing a double chocolate porter, I am also drinking a chocolate cider from Woodchuck. If you find this beer, get it. It is SO unique and has an incredible flavor. It’s weird, but man is it good.

OK, here we go. Time for an “off the wall” of the Sex Panther. No panthers were harmed in the production of this beer. Ha!

In the Glass: The beer is darker than I remember, and has a nice thin tan head on it. I would almost say the color is a “chocolate brown.” See what I did there? I crack myself up. The beer also produces a nice seemingly sticky lace that hangs on to the side of the glass for a little bit. Let’s see what the panther smells like.

Nose: I am immediately hit with a TON of malt. It has a nice dark chocolate aroma to it, and a hint of sweetness in the finish. I can almost taste the beer as I smell it. I don’t expect there to be a lot of chocolate flavor, even though it is a double chocolate porter, but I do expect a hint of sweetness in the finish. Here goes nothing.

Cheers!

Flavor: The beer is too cold (I say that a lot) but there is a lot more flavor in this beer this year. At first, you get the semisweet chocolate flavor that you expect from, say, a Hershey’s bar. But then, as you swallow, it becomes almost dry. Think Guinness only MORE dry. I like it. I am going to let the rest of my sample warm up a little. I bet this pairs well with food.

Mouthfeel: I am really digging the mouthfeel on this. It is nice and thick, and almost creamy. Again, think about what a Guinness does to your palate. Even though I don’t like Guinness, it is a beer that I will always compare beers like this to. I need to have a property poured Guinness on draft in Ireland. That would be ideal.

Aftertaste: The same dryness that I am getting after I swallow hangs on. Let me go back to the Hershey’s reference for a second. You know the flavor you get after you finish a Kiss… THAT is what I am getting in this beer. I would like to have a Hershey’s milk chocolate bar next to me the next time I drink this beer.

I have been in a funk lately. Nothing has really impressed me. But I will say the Sex Panther gives me hope. I better snap out of it. The Strong Beer Festival is this weekend! Oh, and while the Woodchuck chocolate cider is good, it is a different flavor. More unique. Good work, SanTan!

Sheryl’s Thoughts

Tonight must be a SanTan night for me. Earlier I drank a can of their Rail Slide that I had bought recently. I’m not sure if I’d ever had it before or not, but it’s actually really good! It might be the best beer of theirs that I’ve had. I know, that doesn’t give you much promise for this beer I’m about to review, right? You know, since I’ve had it before now. Hehe. It’s still good too!

It’s funny how many times I have overheard people talking about this beer in Total Wine & More. It’s called Sex Panther. And yes, that is the name of the cologne that is talked about in Anchorman. I’m surprised they were even allowed to use this name, but they did. I like it. It’s fun.

The beer looks like pretty much what you’d expect from this style. It is very dark, almost black in the glass. It had a lot of head when Ricky first poured it, but mine has been sitting here a while now, so that’s pretty much all gone. It’s thick and dark. It smells very malty and kind of like dark chocolate. I love dark chocolate, so I hope it tastes like that too.

It does have a dark chocolate/milkshake feel to it. It’s a good beer. If you are a porter/stout person like me, you’ll probably like it. It’s very malty and thick. You know, it’s funny… I almost made the comment that beers like this come out in the winter. I have almost forgotten what a real winter feels like. We have lived in Arizona for going on two years now, and our “winter” basically lasted a week. It’s really not been all that cold since December, and obviously we never see the snow or cold temperatures like we saw in Indiana. While it’s freezing and snowing everywhere else, it’s event season here! We’ve had Barrett-Jackson, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Arizona Strong Beer Festival is this weekend (it’s supposed to be in the 80s!) and soon spring training is starting. Winter? What’s that? Not here!

Well, even though we don’t get much true winter, we can definitely still enjoy dark beers like this here. And this one is good. With a fun name! Definitely one I’d buy again if I was looking for more of a seasonal dark beer.
