I had this beer last year, and I wasn’t that impressed. I was working at Total Wine & More and when I asked the rep about it, he said, “They used double the pineapple this year.” I expected for it to basically taste like pineapple juice. It didn’t and I wasn’t impressed whatsoever. This year, I have no idea how much pineapple they used, but I bought a can to give it another try. Man, was I blown away. I am not going to rate this on that experience, as we have another can here to enjoy… But I have high hopes and can’t wait to try it again.
We have been meaning to visit SanTan Brewing Company, but every time we do something comes up. We also want to schedule an interview with the brewer, but that hasn’t worked out either. Soon! Maybe we can do that at the AmeriCAN Canned Craft Beer Festival next month.
Summer is right around the corner… I’ll drink to that!
In the Glass: Whoa, that has a lot of head. Of course, I just grabbed the can and started pouring. The second glass didn’t have much head, so I gave that to Sheryl. I like to take my time and really dissect the beer, so this gives me time. The beer also produces a nice lace. I like lace. I don’t know why, but I judge a beer based on lace.
Nose: I bet this smells like pineapple. What do you think? Oh yeah. That is like a hoppy pineapple. I really like pineapple, which is why I like Hawaii so much, so I am sure I am going to like this. (I know I like this beer… SanTan sent me 2 cans of this to try. I drank a can and am using this one for the review.)
Let’s just say this is WAY better this year than last. Oh, wait… You aren’t supposed to know that.
Flavor: I bet this tastes like pineapple. What do you think? Man, I was right! It tastes like carbonated pineapple juice. I don’t normally like wheat beers, but if you throw in the sweet flavors of pineapple, I’m sold. Man, that’s good. The palate is covered in the sweet flavors, and while the flavor isn’t as intense as biting into a fresh slice of pineapple, it is close. The lingering flavor you get after your last bite is what I am experiencing here. They did a good job with it this year. Bravo, team.
Mouthfeel: The beer is quite carbonated, but that’s OK. The flavor is good enough for me to not focus much on the mouthfeel. This beer is REALLY easy to drink. My half is almost gone. This would make a killer pool beer. We have a pool. Maybe I will get a 6 pack this weekend and sit poolside. Oh, wait… I am playing golf this weekend. Duh!
Aftertaste: Take a slice of pineapple, chew it up, and wait 10 minutes. That lingering somewhat sweet pineapple flavor is what sticks around here.
The folks over at SanTan are making some great beers. I just wish it was closer to where I live. They are also going to start distributing beer outside of Arizona, so look for them to be growing substantially in the coming years. Glad we get the chance to live where the beer is made. I’ll drink to that. Cheers!
I’ve had this beer several times before. I already know that I like it. It’s not the greatest beer in the world, but it is a good session beer. It’s a nice fruit-flavored wheat beer.
It looks like a wheat beer in the glass. It’s a golden peach color. I’m surprised that it doesn’t have more head than it does. What was there is pretty much gone now. It’s not quite as cloudy as a wheat beer. It smells… like a fruity wheat beer. It smells like pineapple. Time to taste it!
Actually, I take it back. This beer is more carbonated than a wheat beer too. I guess when I think of wheat beer, I think of Blue Moon, and this isn’t really like Blue Moon. This really is like drinking a carbonated pineapple. But the pineapple taste isn’t overwhelming. It’s a good balance, which is why I say that it makes a good session beer. This beer is from a local brewery, SanTan. And while I’m not too impressed with most of their everyday beers, I kind of like some of their seasonals. Sex Panther is another good one. This is their summer beer, and it makes a good one.
I’d definitely try this again, and it’s pretty readily available here. I haven’t had it on tap this year though, so hopefully I will get a chance to. But it’s definitely one I’d have again.
