I got an email a couple of weeks ago asking me if I had tried the new Hard Root Beer from Mission Brewery. I didn’t even know they made a hard root beer, but was excited to try it. After a few emails a few bottles were shipped for me to enjoy. We finally have the chance to review it with you here tonight.
There are other hard root beers out there, including Not Your Father’s Root Beer from Small Town Brewery, but I have never had one. Funny story… I did a beer trade recently and have a bottle of that on the way. But I am excited that the Mission is the first I get to try. I’m a big fan of these guys and think they make some of the best beers in San Diego. The brewery is really cool, too.
I opened the bottle and could immediately smell root beer. I am talking straight up A&W root beer. It looks like soda, smells like soda… I can only hope it tastes like soda! I call it pop, but I digress. Oh, and the head was even fizzy like soda pop. Sorry, but I am sick of talking. Let’s drink!
Oh, what is that? That is bizarre. Do I like it? At first, no. Not at all. That is terrible. Sheryl just said, “Don’t look for a beer taste. Look for a root beer taste.” Let me try again… Because I am going to be really unhappy if this my hard root beer experience. I will say the carbonation is spot on… Almost too carbonated. It’s like drinking root beer. See what I did there?
The middle of my palate gets something almost gross. What is that flavor? The nose is insane. The finish is incredible. It really does finish like root beer. But the mouthfeel and whatever my palate is tasting is weird. It’s not bad. Don’t get me wrong. Just not what I was expecting. Then again, I don’t know what I was expecting.
The finish, as I sit here and continue to swallow, is good. Almost an allspice flavor comes out as it lingers for several minutes after I swallow. This might sound gross, but I just burped. That tasted pretty good. I know, I told you. Gross! But seriously, the finish on this is solid. If I can just hold my nose as I drink it to avoid the flavor that hits the middle of my palate, I would be fine.
Oh, and Sheryl just said, “The middle of your palate? What is that?” She must not have one! Anyway, I am really happy that we got to try this, review this and I look forward to trying other hard root beers in the near future. Cheers!
(I am going to give this 3.5/5 on Ricky Potts Untappd.)
Here is what Sheryl has to say about it…
Well, this one is a bit different. It’s a root beer that’s actually got alcohol in it. I can’t wait to try this! It sounds so good. I love root beer. Ricky heard about this one, and we got it sent to us from Mission Brewery in San Diego. It’s called Mission Hard Root Beer. I mean, it can’t miss, right? I guess we are about to find out.
It both looks and smells like root beer in the glass. It’s dark brown in the glass and looks pretty carbonated. The head dissipated quickly. And of course, it smells exactly like root beer! This should be a fun one to try.
First sip… of course, it tastes a lot like root beer. It almost tastes sweeter than root beer. It’s also got that boozy flavor a bit as well. It’s got a bit of heat going down also. That’s what I notice the most – it tastes like root beer, but it’s “hot” and boozy, like alcohol. I mean, it is 7.5% ABV – that’s not really small. It’s good, though. I like it. It’s also definitely thicker than root beer.
I’d be interesting in comparing this to another root beer flavored beer that I’ve heard of called “Not Your Father’s Root Beer”. I’ve heard it’s good, and I’m curious if it tastes a lot like this or not. Maybe one of these days I’ll get the chance to find out. Until then, I’ll keep drinking this one if I get the opportunity!
