Before I write this, I looked this beer up on BeerAdvocate. It had 0 reviews. I am a fan of BeerAdvocate, and decided to leave my review of this delicious hoppy local brew. Should I leave a similar review on RateBeer, too? Dakine would think so!

Ricky’s Thoughts

In the Glass: Before I talk about this beer, Allen from the Craft Beer Hop Stop commented on this beer saying, “KiloHop is a little boozy.” Just smelling this, as I was taking it to my desk, I am picking up what he is putting down. Anyway, I digress. The beer is darker than I expected and has a nice thin white head. I just finished another IPA that I bought for a badge… Excited for this Imperial IPA to close out the night. Cheers!

Nose: It smells sweet and chewy. I know, that is hard to explain… But it has a great nose. I bet this will really open up as it warms up. Most beers do! I am sick of starring at it. Let’s drink.

Flavor: Not as much flavor as I wanted… I kept thinking there would be an explosion of hops, but it isn’t there. For a beer that is nearly 100 IBU, I expected… I wanted more hops. But this reminds me a lot of the Lagunitas Hop Stoopid. That beer is not hoppy at all. Well, it is. But doesn’t taste hoppy. I must disagree with Allen, though. Not boozy at all. Very well balanced and the hops really come in after I swallow.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is thick and coats your palate with a nice hoppy flavor that really changes as it warms. The mouthfeel on this is the last thing I am worried about.

Aftertaste: This is where the flavor really comes out. As my palate warms, the hops really start to shine, and I am enjoying the complexity of the ingredients used to brew this beer. Not sure why they would limit a beer like this. Just part of the journey, I guess. If you like a well balanced DIPA, then get a can of this. Cheers!

Sheryl’s Thoughts

This beer is a local one for us. SanTan Brewing is in Chandler, AZ. There are a few of their beers that I like a lot and will order when I’m out, but they tend to be seasonals, like Mr. Pineapple and Sex Panther. This one is an IPA, which isn’t my favorite, but it’s an imperial IPA, which I do like better than regular ones. So we’ll see.

It looks pretty IPA-ish (yes, I know, that’s not really a word) in the glass. It’s mostly translucent with a dark honey color to it. Ricky handed it to me, and I haven’t seen much head to it really. It smells like an IPA too… it’s hoppy. This is one reason I’m not a huge fan of IPAs. They all seem about the same to me. I know, I know… they’re not. And I’m probably dumb for thinking that. But, it’s just how it seems to me. Anyway, we’ll see if it tastes any different.

Hmm. Well… to me, yep, this pretty much tastes just like any other IPA. I mean, it’s not bad. But it just tastes like all the rest. I’m sure Ricky will disagree, and I’m guessing he will like it. But it’s just not my style and tastes the same as a lot of other beers to me.

Not because it’s a bad beer, but just because I’m not a big fan of IPAs… I probably wouldn’t order this one again. But hey, if you like them, try it. I think it’s a good representation of the style.
