The Reinheitsgebot Purity Law

Drink a few beers and the pronunciation Reinheitsgebot will become easier while your appreciation of the law will grow. Known as the German Beer Purity Law or the Bavarian Purity Law, the Reinheitsgebot regulated German beer brewing, prohibiting the use of any ingredients besides water, barley, and hops. Prior to this law, which was established in 1516, medieval brewers used ashes and certain toadstools for preservatives. The law stood until 1988, when regulations were changed to allow for more component ingredients, such as yeast, wheat malt, and sugar – but only in foreign beers imported into Germany.
